It is black in color, with a brown streak, submetallic luster, hardness of 5.5, specific gravity of 4.2–4.8, and weak magnetism, with higher iron content resulting in stronger magnetism.

Chromite is refractory and used as a refractory material, as well as for producing chromium(III) oxide and other chromium compounds. Chromite has a wide range of industrial applications. Firstly, it is the primary raw material for smelting ferrochromium alloys, which are widely used in the steel industry to produce various alloy steels, enhancing the strength and wear resistance of steel. Additionally, chromite is used to produce refractory materials, such as refractory bricks and refractory coatings, which exhibit excellent fire resistance in high-temperature environments.
